Lions hero commits to Blues

One of the stand-out performers on the 2009 Lions tour of South Africa has pledged his future to the Cardiff Blues.

Jamie Roberts became one of the most sought-after players in world rugby following a series of heroic displays for Britain and Ireland’s elite, with a host of clubs vying for the 22-year-old’s signature.

But the medical student has ended speculation that he could move on to new surroundings by signing an extension to his contract that will see him remain in the Welsh capital for another three years.

“I’m delighted to have signed a new contract with the Blues. Cardiff is my home city and I’m very passionate about sport in the city and Cardiff in general," said Roberts, who played five times for Ian McGeechan’s tourists, scoring a brace of tries against the Golden Lions.

"It’s an exciting time for the Blues moving into the new stadium and also the superb new training facilities have been great.

"I’m fortunate that I’ve tasted some success early in my career but I remain as focused as ever to play my part in a successful Cardiff Blues team.

"Last season’s achievements and disappointments have driven myself and the whole squad to work harder and strive for bigger and better things.

"The new contract also fits in perfectly with my part-time academic studies at the School Of Medicine where I will hopefully graduate in 2013 if all goes to plan."

Roberts was voted HSBC Player of the Tour after the Lions’ 10-match adventure in South Africa, winning two Test caps before a wrist injury prevented his involvement in the third international in Johannesburg.

He formed a superb centre partnership with veteran Ireland skipper Brian O’Driscoll as he announced his arrival on the world stage just 15 months after making his first appearance for Wales.
