Sexton desperate for trophies with Ireland

Jonny Sexton admits he is itching for some international silverware to go with his overflowing cabinet of club medals.

With Leinster the fly-half won three Heineken Cups, an Amlin Challenge Cup and a host of domestic league titles.

But wearing the green of Ireland it has been far from plain sailing for Sexton, who started all three games for the victorious British & Irish Lions this summer.

Joe Schmidt’s Ireland side have made a 100 per cent start to 2014 however and Sexton is confident that the good times are just around the corner.

“I thought it was easy in my first season, straight in, we (Ireland) beat South Africa and we were playing Scotland for a Triple Crown,” he said.

“I just thought it was going to be the first of many, we’d just take on from the generation [before]. It just hasn’t worked out like that for numerous reasons.

“It would be great to win a piece of silverware and the Triple Crown is a big one, I suppose, in a weird way. I remember that Scotland game.

"It was almost like the Triple Crown wasn’t a big deal because the guys had just come off the back of four Triple Crowns in a short space of time.

“It wasn’t a big deal. Now, it would be huge after the last few seasons that we’ve had.

“I took it for granted. Looking back, I would have loved it. I haven’t won one and it would be fantastic to do it. It would be another stepping stone to potentially winning the Championship.”
