Mallinder upbeat about North return

British & Irish Lion George North is recovering well and could start for Northampton this weekend according to Saints director of rugby Jim Mallinder.

North was assessed for concussion after receiving a cut above his eye in Wales’ autumn international with New Zealand, which saw the All Blacks storm back to win 34-16.

The 22-year-old wing subsequently missed Wales’ final November fixture, which saw them defeat South Africa 12-6 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on Saturday.

However North, who played in all three Tests of the Lions’ successful tour to Australia last year, scoring two tries, could return as Northampton face Treviso in Europe.

“George was in last week and he’s recovering well,” Mallinder told the Northampton Chronicle & Echo.

“He was away last weekend because we gave him a few days off and he’ll come in and we’ll have a good look at him. Hopefully he’ll be available for selection for the weekend.”
