British & Irish Lion Mike Phillips may have had to settle for a bit-part role with Wales of late but the scrum-half insists he can make an impact at the World Cup later this year.

Phillips, a veteran of two Lions tours and 93 Test appearances for Wales, has lost his place to Rhys Webb in Warren Gatland’s starting line-up.

The 32-year-old fell out of the matchday 23 altogether for Wales’ clash with Italy two weeks ago – their last game until the summer.

However, with the World Cup now just five months away, Phillips believes making an impression with club side Racing Metro will secure his place in Gatland’s plans.

“It’s slipping away a bit, but it’s a goal of mine to make the World Cup,” Phillips told Wales Online.

“A large part of my Welsh career has obviously been and done and it’s in the bank.

“But I’m just hoping to really push on, get a good end to the season here with Racing and do enough to get into the squad and the summer camps.

“Hopefully I’ll get a chance to show my stuff there and show that I’m still hungry and raring to go for Wales. It’s fingers crossed really.”
