Cole intrigued by battle for No.1 shirt

Prop Dan Cole believes a fascinating battle between his fellow British & Irish Lions is set to ensue, with places in the England front row up for grabs at this year’s Rugby World Cup.

Cole, Alex Corbisiero and Mako Vunipola are all currently part of England’s 45-man training party and the latter pair harbour hopes of wearing the England No.1 shirt on home soil at this year’s showpiece.

And Cole, who played in all three Tests as the British & Irish Lions defeated Australia in 2013, believes either of his team-mates would be worthy of their place at loosehead.

“There is some great competition at loosehead, you’ve also got two British & Irish Lions in there in Mako and Alex, and Matt Mullan who’s been very good for Wasps this year,” said Cole, at the launch of the Canterbury England World Cup kit.

“There’s that depth there and it’ll be really up to these next eight weeks for people to really put their hand up and take that spot.

“They’re all good guys, they’re all fighting each other and England will be stronger for it.”
