LionsWatch: Saracens’ English core impress against Leicester

Saracens were the top dogs in European rugby last season and they extended their record to eight wins from a possible nine this season thanks to a fine display from their English core against Leicester Tigers.

Owen Farrell and Alex Goode were at the heart of a 24-10 victory, setting up Scotland winger Sean Maitland for the home side’s second try.

And after the wingers had got both of the scores before the break – Chris Wyles opening the scoring – it was the turn of the back to step things up after the break.

From a lineout deep in the Leicester 22, Saracens turned to their maul, and from close range there was to be no stopping Billy Vunipola.

The No 8 was the man at the back of the maul and after the Tigers defence splintered collapsed over the line for the try.

The only disappointment for Saracens will be their failure to kick on and claim a bonus point, with Tigers hitting back through George Catchpole, but they have still extended their lead at the top of the Aviva Premiership with the win.
