The unconventionally-small shape of lock Ian McLauchlan helped him to be christened with the nickname of ‘Mighty Mouse’ due to his strength, wearing the famous Lions jersey 30 times on two Tours – firstly to New Zealand in 1971 and, three years later, in South Africa.

As a late replacement to injured fellow Scot Sandy Carmichael, the All Blacks underestimated McLauchlan, who crossed for a Lions try in their famous first Test victory in Dunedin.

McLauchlan was to play all four Tests in the inspirational 2-1 series victory, playing the same amount in 1974 in South Africa – only on the losing side once in those eight Tests in an iconic period for the Lions, also earning the honour of captain during one of the Tour matches.

The prop's determination was also evident at international level, earning 43 caps for Scotland – even leading them out against England in the Calcutta Cup despite breaking a bone in his leg two weeks previous.
