Part of the ‘Invincibles’ Tour to South Africa in 1974, John James (JJ) Williams was an integral part of the 3-0 Lions success, with his two tries in each of the second and third Tests earning him the title of ‘Welsh Whippet’ in the process.
The Welshman’s capabilities were known well before the Tour as one of the fastest wingers around, earning 30 caps for his country and scoring a record-equalling six tries against South Western Districts prior to the first Test.
Williams’ performances made him one of the first names on the Lions’ teamsheet, also earning the nod for the 1977 Tour of New Zealand, where his try-scoring record remained imperious.
Crossing 10 times in 14 matches, the winger also played three Tests, scoring the only try of the game in the Lions’ only success against New Zealand, the 13-9 victory in the second game in Christchurch, with his achievements earning him the honour of being one of the best wingers in Lions history.
