Niall Brophy and UCD team-mate William ‘Bill’ Mulcahy were the first in an illustrious line of University College Dublin players to star for The British & Irish Lions including Fergus Slattery, Brian O’Driscoll and Sean O’Brien.
He played just once in 1959 – against New South Wales – but returned in 1962 to play two Tests against South Africa and was especially prolific from the wing.
Brophy scored five tries in eight games and started two Tests against the Springboks – his exploits later earned him a spot in UCD’s team of the century.
