South Africa-born Thomas Gubb was one of the 1927 British & Irish Lions, the so-called ‘Lost Lions’ who toured Argentina.
A Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, he won his first Blue in 1926 and was selected to play Varsity every year until 1929.
He captained Oxford in 1929 two years after travelling to South America with The British and Irish Lions.
Though he would go on to captain Middlesex RFC and Blackheath RFC, he never played a Test match for South Africa or England.
In Argentina, he played under coach James Baxter and Scottish captain David MacMyn as they came up against a series of vastly improved South American sides.
Though they won the four internationals – all in Buenos Aires – 37-0 46-0, 34-3 and 43-0, they sparked a serious surge in Argentinean rugby.
