CJ Stander fought his way into the Test 23 on his maiden British & Irish Lions Tour to New Zealand in 2017.

Stander only made his international debut for Ireland in 2016, but after excelling in a green jersey he caught the eye of Warren Gatland to earn a call-up for the Tour.

And the South African-born back-rower was heroic early on – getting through mountains of work in the build-up to the Test series.

Stander started against the Blues in the second game on Tour – scoring his first and only try of the Tour in a narrow defeat.

He then came off the bench against the Crusaders in an impressive 12-3 victory in Christchurch before backing up again and starting against the Highlanders – his third game in less than a week.

After that with the Tests approaching, Stander started against the Chiefs in the final warm-up clash Test but was overlooked by Gatland for that first Test defeat against the All Blacks.

But after another strong showing against the Hurricanes, Gatland could ignore the Munsterman no more and he was rewarded for his performances with a place on the bench for the second and third Tests.

While unused in Wellington, Stander came off the bench for the injured Sean O’Brien in the decider and was vital to the Lions securing an historic drawn series.

Overall, the Munsterman was given 385 minutes of playing time throughout the Tour, making 84 carries and gaining 170 metres in a consistent six appearances.
