Peter O’Mahony capped a magnificent return to form and fitness in 2017 by captaining the British & Irish Lions in the first Test against the All Blacks.

The back row was selected for his first Tour after some superb late-season performances for both Ireland and Munster caught the eye of Warren Gatland.

After making his Lions debut as a replacement against the Blues at Eden Park, the Munster man subsequently earned his first start against the Crusaders.

With the flanker having already having captained both club and country, it was little surprise when O’Mahony added the Lions accolade to his CV and led the side out for their fifth game of the Tour against the Maori All Blacks.

The Munster powerhouse inspired the team to an dominant second-half performance and rose to the occasion brilliantly, producing a stand-out display in the back-row that propelled the tourists to a convincing 32-10 victory.

His impressive work-rate showcased in that game earned him the honour of leading the Lions out for the first Test against New Zealand at Eden Park.

Unfortunately that was to be his final appearance in the famous red jersey however after Sam Warburton returned to the back row to skipper the side in the second and third Tests.

Overall O’Mahony made four appearances on the 2017 Tour, including three starts against the Crusaders, the Maori and the All Blacks – captaining the side in the latter two fixtures.

He finished the Tour with 223 minutes under his belt and the honour of captaining the Lions in a Test match as the tourists secured a famous drawn series with the world champions.
