VIDEO: Davies eager to get his Tour underway

Jonathan Davies is one of four Lions players who will make their first appearance of the Tour against the Crusaders on Saturday and the Wales centre is itching to take his chance.

“I haven’t been nervous, I’m just excited for the challenge.”

All four players, Conor Murray, Sean O’Brien, George North and Davies, were part of the squad four years ago in Australia, and according to the 29-year-old, that has made the waiting a little easier.

Davies only joined up with the team on the Sunday before they flew out, having helped the Scarlets to the Guinness PRO12 title, but now fully up to speed he is desperate to make an impression in Christchurch this weekend.

He said: “I’ve had to bide my time, I came into camp quite late, I’m just excited to get out there now and get on the field. Hopefully we can put a good performance together.

“I’m fortunate that being on the Tour four years ago, I know what to expect. I haven’t been nervous, I’m just excited for the challenge. The opportunity to play for the Lions again, it’s the highest honour in our rugby.

“For me it’s just making sure I go through the process I want to in the week leading up to it, and make sure I prepare like I do and make sure that when I go out there I’m clear about what the coaches want of us as a unit to perform.

“The end of the season was great for us with the Scarlets, we were playing with a lot of confidence and it was a lot of fun as well. I enjoyed that but this is a completely different kettle of fish.

“It’s almost Test match rugby every other day or so. For me it’s making sure I enjoy my rugby like I have been, that I keep working hard and look forward to the game on Saturday.”

Davies will partner Ben Te’o in midfield on Saturday, with the England player having impressed in the opening win over the NZ Provincial Barbarians.

And Davies believes that the longer the Tour goes on, the more fluent the Lions will become.

He added: “It’s important that we want to get some fluency in our attacking play.  We have to make sure the work we do away from the training field is spot on, making sure everyone is clear and every little detail going into the game Saturday, you know each role.

“Ben showed up well on Saturday against the Barbarians, for me it’s about getting a relationship quickly.”
