Vunipola ready for 2014 after trip down memory lane

The British & Irish Lions will soon have to wave goodbye to their glorious 2013 but tour member Mako Vunipola does not intend on letting the memories go.

The 22-year-old was in the thick of the action in all three Tests Down Under as the Lions emerged with their first Tour victory in 16 years.

It was a season of firsts for the prop, making his international debut for England last November before helping to make history in the summer.

And the memories of Australia came flooding back for Vunipola when the Lions were named the team of 2013 at the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year awards earlier this month.

But though the Saracens forward has achieved so much in his fledgling career already, he insists he is not about to rest on his laurels heading into 2014.

“To get an award like that is prestigious and for us players it was an honour which also brought back memories from the summer tour,” Vunipola said.

“Making my England debut was a major highlight but then, in the same season, to play for the Lions was something special.

“Hopefully there’s more to come.

“Every player wants to be playing international rugby and I’m no different. I want to be playing and starting for England but to do that I have to play well for Sarries.”
