The fly-half was on Tour with Scotland in Australia when Warren Gatland asked him to join the British & Irish Lions in the land of the long white cloud.
As a junior, the 24-year-old spent 15 weeks in New Zealand in 2013 and he returned to bolster the Lions ranks at a crucial time before the Test series.
The Glasgow Warriors fly-half would make just one appearance from the substitutes’ bench, replacing Dan Biggar against Hurricanes at the Westpac Stadium.
He may not have had as many minutes in a Lions jersey as others in the squad, but Russell was delighted to have been called up by Gatland.
“I’m definitely glad I came out here; you’d really regret not coming out here,” said Russell.
“It’s a big chance. It might never happen again, so you take it and make the most of it.
“You just jump straight in and give it a go in a completely different environment.
“It’s good fun, and it’s been a good experience.”
