England and Lions prop Coulman passes away

England and British & Irish Lions prop Mike Coulman has passed away at the age of 78.

The dual-code international played his club rugby for Moseley, winning a first cap for England in 1967, before being selected for the Lions Tour of South Africa the following year.

Coulman was a former police boxing heavyweight champion and played in ten games in all on the 1968 Tour.

He scored one try against Northern Transvaal and was selected to start in the third Test with the Springboks 1-0 up in the series after winning the first Test and with the second drawn.

In that match in Cape Town, Coulman lasted just five minutes before tearing ligaments in his ankle which not only ended his Test but also his Tour.

On his return from the Lions Tour, he switched codes to rugby league, signing for Salford, for whom he played 463 times including winning two rugby league championships.

All those at the British & Irish Lions offer their condolences to the Coulman family.
