Wooden Spoon to host charity event at Rugby School

2023 marks 200 years since schoolboy William Webb Ellis picked up a football at Rugby School and set in motion what would eventually become the sport of rugby.

Coinciding with that incredible anniversary is the 40th birthday of the Wooden Spoon, an official charity partner of the Lions Trust.

Since 1983 Wooden Spoon has raised over £29m and funded over 1,300 projects across UK and Ireland, including projects such as sensory playrooms, playground and outdoor activities, health and wellbeing and specialist equipment.

In recognition of both of those milestones, an iconic Vets match and Celebration Ball will be hosted at Rugby School on Saturday 24 June to help with fundraising for both the Wooden Spoon and the new 1823 Bursary at Rugby School to help a future rugby star.

The day will begin with a re-enactment of the original match from 200 years ago before women’s and men’s matches featuring a range of vets and legends from the sport.

There will also be a Celebration Ball from 7pm packed full of entertainment in a spectacular marquee at the birthplace of the game.
