2017 Lions Player Retrospective: Elliot Daly

Daly Extends Wasps Deal

Elliot Daly’s potential is no secret and after impressing on the international stage with England, Warren Gatland decided to give him his first British & Irish Lions Tour. The Wasps winger was keen to show how crucial he could be to the Lions squad ahead of the Test Series against New Zealand.

And he produced a masterful display against the Chiefs, making 46 metres in 59 minutes, which ensured Gatland would give the 24-year-old nod at Eden Park. Following the victory over the Chiefs, Daly said: “It would be amazing to be named in that Test side, at the start of the year I didn’t think that I had a chance. “But if I get anywhere near it, it will be unbelievable.”

Daly would go on to play in all three Test games during which he proved his worth and demonstrated how crucial his long-range kicking can be. His penalty in the third Test just after half-time helped bring the Lions back within three points and heap pressure on the All Blacks in Auckland as the match eventually finished 15-15 to draw the Series. Daly was keen to get the full experience of a Lions Tour and away from the field, the 24-year-old joined Mako Vunipola, George Kruis and Rhys Webb handed out their gifts and answered questions at Orewa College. Daly played a total of 419 minutes in a standout maiden Tour with the Lions, making 191 metres and beating 11 players during his seven appearances.
