Lions legend Duckham dies aged 76

Former Wales and British & Irish Lions centre Arthur Lewis has passed away at the age of 84.

The former Ebbw Vale player toured to Australia and New Zealand in 1971, where he featured in 10 mid-week matches and scored tries against Canterbury and Manawatu/Horowhenua.

An electrician by trade, he won 11 caps for Wales, captained them on three occasions and scored one try against England in the 1973 Five Nations.

"A once-in-a-generation player worthy of being known as a Man of Steel," Ebbw Vale posted on social media. "We send our heartfelt condolences and love to Arthur's family and friends."

Lewis burst onto the scene at Crumlin RFC before joining Ebbw Vale, who were one of the biggest clubs in Wales and where he linked up with fellow Lion John Dawes in the centres. The pair formed a successful partnership for club and country.

Lewis emerged with great credit after helping an invitational Monmouthshire team beat South Africa 14-8 in 1969 in Ebbw Vale. He was first called up by Wales a year later and made his international debut against France in the 1970 Five Nations.

Twelve months on and he was selected by head coach Carwyn James to tour Australia and New Zealand between May-August 1971. His teammate – and friend – Dawes was the Tour captain.

Mike Gibson partnered Dawes in the Test series as the Lions secured a famous 2-1 win against the All Blacks but Lewis saw plenty of action in mid-week.

"Everyone at Crumlin RFC are deeply saddened by the passing of Arthur Lewis," Crumlin added on social media. "Arthur was a massive figure in the rugby world not only for ourselves but for Crosskeys, Ebbw Vale, Wales and British Lions. We as a club and community send Kath and family all our love at this difficult time."
