Despite scoring 37 points in one match on the Tour, Alan Old missed out on a place against South Africa in 1974, with Phil Bennett getting the nod in his fly-half position.
That notable feat for Old, a record at the time, came against the South West Districts, kicking no fewer than 15 conversions and a penalty – as well as a try of his own – as the Lions ran out 97-0 winners prior to the First Test.
He was to amass 59 points in his four games on the Tour before a serious leg injury prematurely ended his trip.
Old played 16 Tests for England, amassing 98 points during his international career, including three drop goals.
Old was also a talented cricketer, playing minor counties cricket for Durham, while his brother Chris played 46 Tests for England.
