Alan Phillips made seven appearances for The British & Irish Lions on the 1980 Tour to South Africa but could not do enough to convince coach Noel Murphy or captain Bill Beaumont to hand him a Test start.
Leicester Tigers and England hooker Peter Wheeler, who had previously toured in 1977, was selected in each of the four Tests leaving Phillips restricted to mainly midweek starts against the likes of Eastern Transvaal and the SA Barbarians.
The Welsh hooker played 18 Tests for his country between 1979 and 1987 and was called up to the 1987 Rugby World Cup squad where he made three appearances and scored his only international try – in a 40-9 victory over Canada.
