Alec Timms returned to the land of his birth, Australia, with The British & Irish Lions in 1899 where he excelled as a centre or on the wing.

He played his club rugby for Edinburgh Wanderers and Edinburgh University, and represented Scotland on 14 occasions. He was also a skilled Australian rules football player.

Timms scored two tries in the opening match of 1899 Tour against Central Southern, but missed the next four games, including the First Test against Australia.

He regained his place for the sixth game of the tour, and missed only two more games, becoming a regular fixture in the team.

Timms came into the Test side as a replacement for Charles Adamson, and formed a fearsome partnership with Gwyn Nicholls in the centres for the Lions’ victorious final three Tests – scoring in the clash at Sydney.

In his final international game in 1905, Timms was given the honour of captaining Scotland as they beat England 8-0 to retain the Calcutta Cup.
