A keen sportsman who also dabbled in football and cricket, it was with Blackheath rugby where Alexander Todd made his mark, earning the call for The British & Irish Lions Tour to South Africa in 1896.
As one of four Blackheath players – including captain Johnny Hammond – Todd featured in all four Tests against the Africans, four of 19 games in all.
The forward even crossed for a try in the second Test, a 17-8 success which saw all the tries scored by the front line as the Lions won the series 3-1.
They were to be the only international points for Todd, four years later going on to play twice for England.
