Alfred Hind was one of the original multi-talented sportsmen to don a Lions jersey and first came to prominence as a student at Cambridge University.
According to records from that era, he ran the 100 yards in 9.8 seconds and, unsurprisingly, found his home on the wing for the university’s rugby side.
He appeared in the Varsity match of 1900 before joining Leicester, though went on to play much of his club rugby with Nottingham.
His performances there drew attentions from the Lions and in 1903 he toured South Africa where he appeared in three games in six days.
Upon his return to the British Isles the Lancastrian – who also played first-class cricket for Nottinghamshire – eventually picked up two Test caps with England, against New Zealand and Wales.
