Alfred Tedford was educated at Methodist College Belfast and, after representing Malone at club level, first appeared in Ireland colours in 1902.
A strong Home Nations Championship not only saw the forward remain in the team for years to come, but also earned him a call-up for the Lions Tour of South Africa the following year.
Tedford was an ever-present, appearing in all three Tests against the Springboks and 18 times all told – he was noted for his try-scoring as well, dotting down in five games across the two-month Tour.
Back with Ireland, Tedford played into his 30s and earned 24 caps in emerald green. Notably he scored try-doubles in games against Wales and England, and went on to serve as president of the RFU for a year in 1919.
