Glasgow Warriors scrum-half Ali became the fifth ‘Price’ to represent The British & Irish Lions in 2021, having gradually grown in stature throughout 42 Test caps for an improving Scotland side.
The 27-year-old was part of an eight-strong Scottish contingent in the 2021 Lions squad and made seven appearances on Tour, including three Test appearances.
Price made his debut in Lions red against Japan at BT Murrayfield and then scored a try on his first start against the Sigma Lions in a commanding 56-14 win.
Price was handed the No.9 jersey for the first Test against South Africa, which the Lions won 22-17.
He played 23 minutes from the bench in the 27-9 second Test defeat before returning to the starting line-up for the decider, which the Springboks won 19-16.
Price was born in King’s Lynn and came through the ranks at English outfit Bedford Blues, having also demonstrated skills in cricket, hockey and athletics while attending Wisbech Grammar School in Cambridgeshire.
After signing as part of Warriors’ Elite Development programme in the run up to the 2013/14 season – a deal which allowed him to play for Stirling County for four years – Price signed professional terms at Scotstoun in December 2015.
Qualifying for Scotland selection through his mother, the avid gamer was handed his senior Test debut 11 months later, coming on as a 73rd minute replacement in a 43-16 win over Georgia.
Price made his Six Nations debut against France in 2017 after Greig Laidlaw was forced off injured, and he retained his place in the line-up for the remainder of the Championship as Vern Cotter’s side finished fourth.
While notching his first international try against Italy in Singapore later that year, Price continued to impress back on domestic duty, helping Warriors to a first European Champions Cup quarter-final en route to being named the club’s 2016/17 Player of the Season.
That feat was matched two years later as the nippy No.9 played an integral role in the club’s run to the PRO14 final, in which they eventually came up short against Leinster.
Though he sustained a foot injury on his World Cup debut against Ireland in 2019, Price featured in each of Scotland’s 2020 and 2021 Six Nations clashes, helping Gregor Townsend’s men to wins at Twickenham and in Paris in the latter – the first time they had achieved this feat in a single Championship since 1926.
