Allan Martin was a tower of strength for Wales and the Lions in the second row, having nurtured his physical frame by holding various school records in the shot put, discus and hammer as a teenager.

Indeed there is very little that Martin could not do – as part of the successful Wales team during the 1970s, he was also renowned for his long-distance goal-kicking including an eight-point haul in victory over England in 1975.

While he never lined up a kick in a Lions jersey, Martin is one of a number of esteemed individuals to participate in two Tours, travelling to New Zealand in 1977 and South Africa three years later.

His sole Lions Test cap came against the All Blacks in the first Test defeat, packing down alongside Irishman Moss Keane.

He was 29 by the time of the Tour to South Africa but did not retire from senior rugby until the age of 42, playing more than 780 games for club side Aberavon in the process.
