A rare breed for modern Lions, Alun Lewis was called up by the Lions as an injury replacement for Brynmor Williams who pulled a hamstring in the third Test but never managed an international cap for his country.

Lewis joined the 1977 Tour to New Zealand and played twice against North Auckland and Bay of Plenty before featuring in the final game of the tour – a quick stop-off in Fiji.

The Blackwood-born scrum-half played his club rugby for Bedford and London Welsh and represented Cambridge University in the 1975 and 1976 Varsity Match but continued to be overlooked by Welsh selectors.
