Andrew Stoddart, unlike many of the 1888 Lions, is mainly remembered as a swashbuckling international cricketer, who featured in Ashes Test matches and has a batting average of 35.

But the County Durham was also a rugby hero too, playing ten times for England and captaining them on four occasions.

A gifted all-rounder, Stoddart took to the game of Australian Rules football very well - the Lions played some exhibition matches in the new sport while on Tour.

When Robert Seddon died, Stoddart assumed the captaincy, while he was also captain of the first ever Barbarian team.

Stoddart met future wife Emily Luckham while on Tour, while in later life he worked on the Stock Exchange.
