Andy Nicol went on two separate Lions Tours but made just one appearance in the red jersey, when he came off the bench in a 49-25 win over Taranaki in 1993.
For that Tour of New Zealand, Nicol was called up as a temporary replacement for Robert Jones and, eight years later in Australia, he would get an even more unlikely SOS from coach Graham Henry.
The Scottish scrum-half was following the Lions around Australia on a supporter’s tour when he got the call to join the squad as an injury replacement for Austin Healey, duly finding himself on the bench for the decisive third Test in Sydney.
Unfortunately, Nicol never made it on to the pitch and retired from rugby in 2003, by which time he had become the first man to captain a British side to a European trophy with Bath in 1998.
