The son of a vicar and also an avid cricketer, Anthony Henniker-Gotley played rugby for Oxford University and Blackheath FC and at representative level for Barbarian FC.

He made his international debut in March 1910 at Parc des Princes in England’s match versus France – one of six games he played for his national side.

That same year Henniker-Gotley was called up to represent the Combined British side who travelled to Argentina.

He featured in the only international match against the host nation which the tourists won 28-3.

During World War I, Henniker-Gotley served in the North Rhodesia Police and served in East Africa while he also spent time in the Royal Air Force.
