Bill Beaumont’s international career may have only last seven years but he packed plenty of action into that time frame.
He made his international debut at just 22 years of age, as a replacement against Ireland in 1975, and succeeded Roger Uttley as England captain in 1978.
He led England in 21 of his 34 caps with his best moment coming in 1980 when he led them to their first Grand Slam since 1957.
The towering second row was named captain of The British & Irish Lions later the same year, the first England captain since Douglas Prentice in 1930.
Beaumont had previously featured as a replacement on the 1977 Tour to New Zealand where he featured in the final three Tests and also scored a try in the final game of the Tour against Fiji.
After his playing career came to an end, Beaumont went into rugby administration and was named World Rugby Chairman in 2016, taking over from Bernard Lapasset.
