Very little passed down the flank on Bill Clement’s watch – the Welshman is regarded as one of the best defensive wingers to have ever graced the game.

Llanelli-born Clement was first selected for Wales in 1937, though it was to be a disappointing Home Nations Championship as his country fell to three defeats.

But the selectors kept their faith and after helping beat England in Cardiff a year later, Clement scored his only Test try in a victory over Ireland.

That prompted a call-up by the Lions for the 1938 Tour to South Africa and, while a Test appearance eluded him, he left the country boasting a strike-rate of four tries in six games.

Sadly it was to be his last Tour after being forced to retire from the game at the age of 23 due to a serious knee injury.

But Clement’s services go far beyond his playing career. He earned a Military Cross after seeing action in World War Two, in which he was wounded twice.

He also served as secretary of the WRU for 26 years, and was awarded an OBE for his contribution to rugby upon his retirement in 1981.
