Lansdowne half-back Bill Cunningham played three games for The British & Irish Lions on their 1924 Tour to South Africa.

With Lions greats Herbert Waddell and Arthur Young for competition, Cunningham was largely confined to the replacements bench.

However Cunningham did make one particularly crucial intervention that has earned him a warm place in Lions lore.

The Lions would lose the 1924 four-Test series 3-0, but in the drawn third Test, when Cunningham stood in for Waddell, the Irishman would score the Tourists’ only points in a 3-3 tie.
