A key figure in the game in its early development, Scottish three-quarter Bill Maclagan led the Lions to South Africa in 1891.
He scored eight tries in 19 appearances on the Tour, and helped the Lions to a 3-0 series victory, scoring a try in the final Test.
His Lions career followed a brilliant international career for Scotland, for whom he played for 13 seasons, a Scottish record for 60 years.
He played 25 times in all for Scotland between 1878 and 1890. He was inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame in 2009.
