Three years after first being selected to make his international bow for Wales during the 1947 Five Nations, the first official game for the Welsh team after the war, Billy Cleaver was selected for the 1950 Lions Tour to Australia and New Zealand.

During his time in the southern hemisphere, Cleaver played in ten provincial matches, plus in three Test games against the All Blacks, in which he played as a full-back, despite usually playing as a fly-half.

Cleaver – who won 14 caps for Wales during a three-year international career – scored 21 points for the Lions on that Tour, including a try in the 47-3 Lions victory over New South Wales Country.
