Initially playing his club rugby for Northampton, Blair Swannell toured with The British & Irish Lions on two occasions.

He first travelled to Australia in 1899 and then again went Down Under and on to New Zealand in 1904.

The No.8 played a total of seven Test matches on these tours, and scored one Test try – against Australia during 1904.

Interestingly, Swannell settled in Australia after his second Tour of the country and even played a single game for his new home when they faced New Zealand in 1905.

During the First World War he joined the Australian Imperial Force, but was killed while taking part in the Landing at Anzac Cove during the first day of the Gallipoli Campaign.
