Born on Valentia Island, County Kerry, Bob Graves dabbled at both flanker and hooker during his rugby career but it was as a prop he is arguably best remembered for with the Lions.

Graves made his Ireland debut at the age of 25 – in a defeat to England at Lansdowne Road – but proved near-impossible to shift from the No.2 jersey for the next four years.

And he would bring his Test career to a fine end after he was called up for the Lions Tour of South Africa in 1938.

He appeared 13 times all told and scored a try in a win over Rhodesia, though his greatest achievement came during the third Test with the Springboks.

Having been involved in the second Test defeat that ensured the Lions would lose the series, Graves packed down as a prop and helped his side recover from a 13-3 half-time deficit to a 21-16 victory.
