William ‘Bunner’ Travers was a key cog in the 1938 Lions Tour to South Africa – featuring in 21 of 24 possible matches on Tour.

The hooker, who won 12 caps for Wales over the space of 12 years, scored his only try of the Tour in the 15-11 triumph over Natal at Pietermaritzburg.

Travers had followed his father George – who was seen as one of rugby’s first specialist hookers at the turn of the 20th century – into the sport and represented Newport at club level for the majority of his career.
