A doctor, a temporary Major in World War I, and a member of The British & Irish Lions – there was hardly anything that Cecil Boyd couldn’t do.
Boyd first played the game for Dublin University, and in doing so was approached to join Johnny Hammond’s British & Irish Lions for the 1896 Tour to South Africa.
The Irishman played in 12 games on the Tour but, despite the Lions winning 8-0 in the first Test, a reshuffle saw him lose his place for the remaining games against South Africa.
His Lions experience came even before he played for his country, finishing his playing days by joining The British Army in the Royal Army Medical Corps.
