A man also representing Ireland in squash and tennis, as well as playing cricket and hockey, rugby was to be the main calling for Alexander Cecil Pedlow, wearing the famous Lions jersey 13 times in the 1955 Tour of South Africa.
Had it not been for a literal slice of luck, the Irishman may not have ventured into the Lions jersey. Chancing his arm with a drop-goal on debut, Pedlow skewed it so far wide it stayed in play, allowing his team in for a score and maintaining his place in the side.
And the wing/centre certainly made the most of his opportunity, crossing eight times on the Tour including one in the first Test, scoring a decisive try in the 23-22 victory at Ellis Park.
Pedlow came back for the final Test, this time scoring points from the boot, and while his career was to go on for ten years, the zenith of his career was in 1955.
