After establishing himself as a skilled half-back while playing for Durham, Charlie Adamson was invited to join the touring Barbarians side in 1898, and even though he never represented England a call up to the first official Lions tour of Australia in 1899 soon followed.
Adamson was the stand-out player of the tour, being selected in all 20 matches and amassing eight tries, 35 conversions, three dropped goals and ten penalties goals across all the games, making him the Tour's top scorer.
The turning point of the tour came as after an opening defeat to the hosts in the first Test, skipper Matthew Mullineux dropped himself to move Adamson across to half-back from the centres.
The Lions won the remaining three Tests, with Adamson scoring in all of them.
Adamson was also one of the many cricketing Lions, playing mainly for Durham City. However, after the 1899 Tour he remained in Brisbane playing club cricket and turned out for a single match for Queensland, as well as playing in Durham's first Minor Counties Championship match in 1895.
