A part of the 1896 British & Irish Lions Tour to South Africa, Charles Robinson wore the famous Lions jersey eight times all told, all of which came in Tour matches.

A utility back, Robinson was born in Tynemouth although never earned international honours for his country, earning a place with the Lions based on his exploits with Northumberland.

He was to play in the opening Tour match – victory over Cape Town Clubs – the first of a demanding personal schedule of four games in 11 days.

Robinson also crossed for a try against East London, kicking a drop-goal in his final match in South Africa against Johannesburg Town.
