Powerful forward Charlie Mathers was selected to go to Australia and New Zealand on the first ever British & Irish Lions Tour in 1888.
Mathers started his rugby career at Bramley, where he impressed so much he was quickly moved into the Yorkshire side in County rugby.
On the Lions Tour he played in 25 games, scoring six tries including a double against South Island.
After touring with the Lions, Mathers converted to rugby league in his mid-30s.
