Chris Ralston’s Lions experience was limited, but he could hardly have participated in a better Tour than the 1974 ‘Invincibles’ series in South Africa.
The powerful lock was to only play one Test in the tour – the 13-13 draw in Johannesburg – but his 13 matches on the Tour overall ensured it was time well spent.
An Englishman, Ralston started 22 games for his country, and was barely two years into his international career when he got the nod from Alun Thomas.
Playing in three warm-up matches before the First Test – including the 97-0 hammering of South West Districts – Ralston had the unenviable task of battling Willie John McBride and Gordon Brown for a Test spot, forced to miss out in all but the final one.
