Wales flanker Clem Thomas was selected to tour South Africa in 1955, although he missed the first ten matches due to appendicitis.
The Cambridge University graduate won his first Wales cap in 1949 against France, the first of 26, while his biggest contribution was arguably a cross-field kick that set up Ken Jones to score the winning try against New Zealand in 1953.
Thomas was taken ill shortly after the Lions left for South Africa in 1955, although he returned to health in time to play in the final two Test matches against the Springboks.
After his playing days finished, Thomas became a rugby journalist and an author – working for the Observer for 35 years – and was also a noted Lions historian.
