Irish international Colin Patterson was called up to the Lions alongside compatriot John Robbie just two years after making his international debut against New Zealand in November 1978.
The scrum-half had scored five tries in his 11 Tests for Ireland prior to the 1980 tour to South Africa and made ten appearances on Tour before a knee injury picked up against Griqualand West in the last game before the final Test brought his career to an abrupt end.
The Ulster man had appeared in all three Tests against the Springboks, all of which were defeats, prior to that and was a try-scorer against Transvaal.
