David Hewitt’s steady boot proved to be crucial as The British & Irish Lions secured a series win in Australia in 1959, before losing 3-1 to New Zealand later that summer.
The Irish centre followed his father, two uncles and two brothers with international honours as he made his Ireland debut as an 18-year-old against Australia.
His talent was obvious so quickly that by the end of the season he was a Lion. His speed, composure and goal-kicking ability shone as he booted 112 points and scored 13 tries on the Tour.
He toured South Africa three years later but hamstring injuries limited him to seven appearances.
