The “gentleman giant” David Marques played 11 seasons for Harlequins, 23 times for England and two Tests for the British & Irish Lions on their 1959 Tour to Australia and New Zealand.
A Cambridge Blue, he also represented the Army and the Barbarians, while he made a then-record 22 consecutive appearances alongside John Currie in the English second row between 1956 and 1961 – winning Grand Slams in 1957 and 1958.
Though the archetypal English gentleman – famed for his fine manners and aristocratic dress – he was close friends with gnarled Pontypool prop Ray Prosser and at 6ft5 was in 1959, the largest man in international rugby.
