Flanker Derrick Grant toured with the Lions to Australia and New Zealand in 1966 and, although he did not feature in any of the Test matches, it changed his outlook on rugby forever.
Grant won the first of his 14 Scotland caps in France in 1965, and was picked for the Lions just a year later on the back of an impressive campaign.
Grant remarked that the 1966 Lions tour was where he really understood the game as he leaned about the ‘total rugby’ style of the All Blacks – which changed his attitude and gave his love for rugby a new lease of life.
The former Hawick High School pupil went into coaching when his playing days ended, and he enjoyed a three-year spell as Scotland coach from 1985, winning nine of his 18 matches.
